8 The Church and the Voices

In June 1971, a series of articles appeared in English and Irish newspapers which were obviously designed to bring one issue into the open: the reaction of the churches to the Voice Phenomenon. After the first Late Late Show in Dublin in which a Roman Catholic priest from Rome had participated, the writer said: “I was absolutely certain that the next morning some public denunciation would be read from all the pulpits in Dublin, signed by Archbishop John Charles McQuaide; fellow journalists who were more acquainted with the Dublin scene were equally sure that no such denouncement would be made. They were right”.

The journalist then gave his reasons for being suspicious of the attitude the Church appeared to have adopted:

“In spite of the greater flexibility of the Church after Vatican II, I found it difficult to accept that the Hierarchy had turned its back on Cardinal Roberti and Mgr. Palazzini, whose Dictionary of Moral Theology (1962) reiterated the decrees of the Holy Office which categorically prohibit any experiment . . . irrespective of any theoretical explanation of phenomena whether they are manifestations of a preternatural order or belonging to the sphere of natural laws.’ There is no doubt that Raudive’s experiments fall within this category.”

Later in the article, he analysed some aspects of my presentation of the Voice Phenomenon which struck him to be peculiar. By innuendo I was made out to be an eminence grise who “with ease produced a Superior of the Pauline Fathers from Rome who endorsed everything Peter Bander said.”

What exactly is the attitude of the Church? For a start, it is quite impossible to speak of ‘the Church’ because there happen to be some differences of opinion between the various denominations with regard to a great number of subjects. There are, in fact some very fundamental differences between their beliefs in life after death. A strictly Non-conformist Christian would have to overcome substantial difficulties if he wanted to subscribe to anything but the ‘resurrection of the body’ on the day of the ‘Last Judgement’. Within the Anglican Church both the Non-conformist and the Catholic doctrines are represented. The Roman Catholic Church, on the other hand, teaches a more active life after death; Intercession by the Saints and ‘passing through a period of purification’ are two definite creeds of the faith. As far as the Jewish religion is concerned, it would be impossible to link the Voice Phenomenon with any belief in a post-mortal existence. There has been no ‘Jewish reaction’ to Breakthrough and only a remote ‘nonconformist interest’ was shown with warnings and quotations taken from passages of the Old Testament, suspecting the voices to be of the Devil and possibly an “Abomination to the Lord”. Apart from Mgr. Pfleger, Prof. Frei (both Roman Catholics) and Dr. Voldemars A. Rolle, who is a Lutheran Pastor and a Professor of Physics, no churchmen had commented publicly on the voices before Breakthrough was published in Britain. I anticipated an active reaction in
